Successful sale at Christie’s New York

In early March of this year, days before COVID-19 was identified as a global pandemic, I assisted in the sale of a pair of Ed Ruscha (American, born 1937) etchings: Two People Temporarily Separated and Two Happy People at Christie’s New York.

My clients, private collectors from Tacoma, were very pleased with the result. The lot realized $27,500 against an estimate of $7,000 – $10,000.

Please let me know how I can assist you in the sale of contemporary American prints and multiples.

Jacob Lawrence at The Met

I recently had the privilege of valuing a powerful, museum-bound Jacob Lawrence drawing. Having had the pleasure of working with Jacob and Gwendolyn Knight Lawrence at Francine Seders Gallery in Seattle and DC Moore Gallery in New York, it was thrilling to encounter this work in a local collection.

On August 29, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle, a thirty-panel series of scenes from American history painted between 1954 and 1956. The exhibition closes November 1, 2020 and is accompanied by a catalogue edited by Elizabeth Hutton Turner and Austen Barron Bailly.

Online exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art

Last week I participated in an ArtTable sponsored virtual tour let by DMA curator Dr. Anna Katherine Brodbeck of For a Dream of Houses at the Dallas Museum of Art. Although planned long before the current crisis, this captivating exhibition asks us to ponder the meaning of house and home.

COVID-19 and the local art market

Recently MBA Seattle Auctions held an online sale of Northwest Modern and Contemporary Art. There were many fine examples of contemporary craft, including a very tempting little Howard Kottler stoneware vase titled Peacemaker/The Lady Killer, c. 1960s. I followed along to get a sense of the local auction market and how it might impact upcoming appraisals of Seattle and other Northwest artists.

The folks at MBA know their business; most items sold within the assigned estimates.

If you have artwork that you are interested in selling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I may be able to assist you through facilitating consignment at auction, appraisals, or other valuation-related consulting.
